Brief Update on Nano WriMo 2008

For those who might care, I've not been able to write often here. I have a couple posts in the hopper, but I'm trying to write a new novel this month as part of National Novel Writing Month, and I just don't get much time to write anything else.

As you can see by the cool little widget on top of the sidebar, I've written more than 7000 words. If that sounds like a lot, I thank you. It's not. I'm way behind pace. And these 75 words or so don't count.

If you're a fellow Nano, feel free to visit me. I'm elephantguy.

Ouch.

My NaNo is about 15k underway -- I got all caught up Monday night, then fell behind yesterday when I failed to write a single word. =P Yucky.

I'll probably drop by your NaNo page. =]

Thanks, Feliza, and good luck. You're doing great! Stop back any time.

I feel your pain. I cracked 13,000 today. So, only what? 7 grand behind? Until tomorrow, when it'll possibly be about 8 grand behind. NO! NO! Get back foul self defeating thought! Ugh.

Thanks, KD. I'm fighting through it. I even gave one of my characters a blog today so he can keep in touch with his son. Whether I reach 50,000 or 30,000 or get distracted while riding on fumes past 13,000, I believe in my story. I'll get there!

and believing in your story is ultimately what it's all about. Love the blog idea - you should post THAT one on the Nano site.

Perhaps. The site can be so clunky, I mostly go on only to update my progress. But I happen to have my blog and email up and humming while working on the Nano (totally susceptible to distractions ... bad bad), so it's much easier to just post it here. Plus, this way I get several comments on my blog, which I always like!

The Nano site has gotten waaaay better since the beginning of Nov when it was hair pullingly slow. But yeah, I hear ya about getting comments, rather than having a post swamped by 60 other people's posts. I post over there and then forget where I've posted. Huh, where DID I waste all those words rather than working on my actual raison d'etre? I don't know! LOL

Exactly. If you hadn't noted my comment in one of the lit fic strings, I'd never have returned to it.

But in fairness to Nano, you're right, the site's much better now.

And I'm enjoying this year's 'contest' more than my debut last year. I'm getting more out of it.

You've done this a few times, does it get old?

Does it get old? Uhm, it's been different every year (this is my 4th). It's a whole experience for me though - I believe in them as a nonprofit and their mission, so I raise money for them and have donated office supplies, cash etc. I'm going to the Night of Writing Dangerously this Sat, which I went to last year and had a blast. I'm really lucky to have met Chris Batty and had the chance to hang out with him at the San Francisco Writers Conference last year. And he asked me to do a Q&A on the front page last year as well. I'm a therapist in my other life, so I wrote a piece on dealing with relatives and family obligations while trying to keep up your word count. It's probably still archived on the Nano site. Anyway, it doesn't get old, just different.

I can accept different. I'm hoping that next November I'll be doing this as an agented writer (though that would require sending out a query or two ... a tale for another time). Good for you, helping them raise money. I cover nonprofits in my 'other' life, so I know whereof you speak. ... It's getting late here on the east coast, and I'll have to pack it in still short of the 10,000 I was hoping to reach. Have a good night, and see you in AQ or Nano land. Keep writing.

You too! Happy writing!
